In 1879, Portuguese immigrants boarded the ship 'Ravenscrag' bound for Hawaii. Most from the tropical climate island of Madeira were chosen on purpose to be able to endure the tropical climate of Hawaii. They carried little but hope, dreams, and, yes, their beloved cavaquinhos.
Once in Hawaii, the cavaquinho captivated the locals. They loved its bright, cheery sound, and it was soon adopted and adapted into the 'ukulele.' The name translates to "jumping flea," a nod to the lively movement of players' fingers. Its sound perfectly fit the islands' vibe and spreads like a wave. Later, mainland America fell for the ukulele during the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915. From there, it rode the tide of popular music and spread across the globe, strummed by everyone from everyday folks to pop stars.
