Once in a while, someone says something that makes you think and change your perspective about a subject. These are rare and can only happen if you keep a growth mindset and are willing to challenge your thoughts.
I never liked wrestling because I felt it was fake. But after listening to this interview with Ric Rubin (music producer of Johny Cash, Metallica, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others), I realized that for some people being fake and upfront about being fake is what makes wrestling beautiful.
Ric Rubin argues that wrestling is popular because it “is honest about what it is in a world where nothing is honest at what they are.” That is a pretty powerful statement. His point is that the real world is filled with people creating their narratives in their heads of what they want to be the reality, and wrestling, at least, is upfront that what they do is scripted/fake, making it compelling. So that makes it an excellent metaphor for life, as most things we never know are genuine or our imagination.
It is an interesting observation, and it might be true that it is a big part of wrestling success. I think it might not be too productive to believe that everything in life is “fake.” Still, it is a good reminder that we humans are very good at telling lies to ourselves to convince ourselves of a particular narrative, and essential to be aware of that bias.
