Jigsaw Puzzle

An Education Tool Becomes a Entertainment for Millions

From the young to the elderly, jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts can be found everywhere. While primarily enjoyed today as a recreational activity, the origins of the jigsaw puzzle lie in education. The earliest version was created by an English cartographer to teach children geography.

John Spilsbury, a mapmaker and engraver in London, created the first puzzle in 1767 by mounting a map onto wood and cutting it into pieces along the borders of countries. These early puzzles, known as “dissected maps,” gained popularity among the wealthy as both educational tools and sources of entertainment.

Puzzles were still very expensive, and only late in 19th century they would start to spread. With the invention of the jigsaw tool in the late 19th century, intricate cuts and designs became possible and cheaper to make, giving rise to the puzzles we recognize today. Also, puzzles evolved from maps to include other images which appeal to a broader audience.

Now enjoyed by millions, jigsaw puzzles offer a perfect blend of relaxation and challenge. From simple designs to thousands of interlocking pieces, they remain a testament to Spilsbury’s ingenuity, proving that learning and fun can fit together seamlessly—just like the pieces of a puzzle.
