The Evolution of Humanity’s Driving Force and The World First

Gears have been a remarkable accelerator of human progress, refining the invention of the wheel and enabling countless mechanical and technological advancements. By transferring and transforming motion, they pushed the boundaries of what machines can achieve.

The earliest known use of gears can be traced back to the Chinese South Pointing Chariot, believed to have been designed by Emperor Huang Di in the 5th century BC. This chariot used a geared mechanism to keep an indicator pointing in a fixed direction, regardless of the chariot’s movement. Scholars hypothesize that its mechanism functioned as a differential gear train, allowing for adjustments in rotation during turns.

The Greeks advanced the use of gears, applying them to astronomical calculations and early computing devices. By 1st century BC., they had created the Antikythera Mechanism, a sophisticated gear system with over 30 components capable of predicting celestial movements, eclipses, and even timing athletic festivals. This device, discovered in a shipwreck in 1900, highlights the Greeks’ ability to use gears not only as tools but as representations of their scientific understanding of the universe.

Centuries later, gears became integral to Leonardo da Vinci’s designs for war machines and weaponry, and they continued to evolve through innovations like Joseph Whitworth’s gear hobbing process in the 19th century.
