Synapses are the connections between neurons in the brain, and they play a crucial role in how we think, feel, and behave. But, a crucial aspect of reaching adult brain maturity is letting go of a big part of those connections.
We spend the early part of life until adolescence creating millions of connections in our brains. This is a period of fast learning, where the brain tries to absorb concepts as fast and as many as possible.
However, as we reach adolescence, the brain prunes away some of these synapses, eliminating no longer necessary connections. This process, called synapse pruning, allows the brain to become more efficient and specialized, removing "noise" and making room for more effective connections.
This is a good lesson from our Biology that sometimes less is more. In the same way, we can all benefit from cutting back on the unnecessary clutter in our lives, whether it's physical possessions or mental distractions, to free up energy for what matters to us.
