Before the internet, people used phonebooks to find the right number for a person or business. With it, phonebooks became irrelevant. However, the internet still needs a way to identify the correct “address” for each website. This is where the Domain Name System (DNS) comes in. The DNS is a building block of what allows us to access the incredible tool that is the Internet.
During the early days of the Internet, finding information was quite difficult. At that time, the only way to find the information was through a file called HOSTS.TXT. This file served as a phone book that contained the names and numbers (in this case, IP addresses) of other computers connected to the network. However, as the internet started to grow, it became apparent that this system had many limitations. It was impractical to manually update the digital "phone book" on every computer connected to the internet as new websites were being created and others changed their addresses. This was simply impossible with a network that was constantly expanding.
Enter the breakthrough invention of DNS in 1983 by Paul Mockapetris. DNS replaced the single, difficult-to-handle list of names and numbers with a decentralized, hierarchical structure that acts as a globally distributed phone book. When you enter a website's name in your browser, DNS servers act as sophisticated operators and guide your request through the internet to find the website's current IP address. This process is seamless and invisible to the user, and it relies on a network of servers that communicate with each other to direct your query to its destination.
The most fascinating aspect of this system is how it is financed and operated, which is a testament to collaboration among people on a global level. The Domain Name System (DNS) is backed by a complex network of funding from governments, private sectors, and non-profit organizations. It is a project of monumental scale, connecting countries and cultures and ensuring that this vast digital landscape remains open and accessible to everyone.
