More than 3,000 bananas are consumed every second. The rise of the most popular fruit in the world, Bananas, was primarily thanks to marketing.
In the 19th century, bananas were introduced to the US but remained a relatively unknown fruit until the 1940s. That's when a Chiquitita commercial, which taught customers the basics of banana eating, revolutionized the fruit's popularity.
The commercial looks ridiculous in today’s lens, mainly describing common sense, such as never putting a banana on the fridge or identifying ripeness by color. But when most Americans had never eaten a banana, it was a simple but effective way to show people how easy and enjoyable bananas can be.
It is interesting how things that seem alien to us can become part of mainstream culture in a very short time thanks to advertising. In this case, it was mostly good for humanity (except for its dark history), adding a healthy fruit, easy to consume as a regular part of consumers’ diet.
